| My Account / Delete A FanFic |
Cross section FanFic deletion.
A slight glitch that I stumbled accross the other day needs to be fixed. At the moment, if you have a fic submitted to The Zone Noir, and you delete it from the My Account Delete A Fic page, then things go a little wrong. The problem is that although the fic get's deleted from the main fic category pages, there is still a link to it in The Zone Noir, which will now lead people to a 404 error.
It's all because I've completely changed the way the fic listing on The Zone Noir works, in comparrison to the main fic listings. On The Zone Noir there are no dynamic queries when a visitor calls the page, instead the fic list is built as a static HTM file when the fic is submitted. This is much nicer on the server, but means that if a fic is ever deleted from the site, it's not removed from The Zone Noir because The Zone Noir doesn't actually dynamically look at any of the fic directories.
Eventually, the whole site will work in the same way as The Zone Noir. It will make no difference to the way users experience things, but will be a whole load easier on the server. Until then though, I have to do some extra work to make sure that fic deletions are reflected on The Zone Noir.

Review responses
At the moment there's no way for an author to respond to comments left for their fic, other than by posting another review. It'd be nice if authors could add a response to reviews left for fic.

Writers Room LJ credit
At the moment, authors that have permission can post to the Writers Room LJ directly from the My Account page on Season2Ep14 - This is good, as it means you can contribute without actually having a LJ account. Unfortunately it also means that if you do have an LJ account, you don't get credit for the post. No one knows it was you that just made that insightful post.
So, I want posts in the LJ to have a credit automatically tagged onto the bottom linking back to a users profile page here on Season2.

Remove Javascript Dependance
At the moment it's not possible to add a fanfic without having a Javascript enabled browser (and having JS turned on). This is obviously not good, and is really only the result of a little laziness on my part. The Javascript in question is only validating the form input, which I could (and should!) do server side.

Add a 'notify me of updates' feature
Something which has always been in the back of my mind since the start is the ability to add your e-mail address (even if you don't have an account here) to a certain fic. Then when an author updates that fic, everyone on the list get's automatically e-mailed about the update.

Remove my details option
An automated method of removing a users details from the Beta Readers list. At the moment it can only be done by manually removing the entry from the Beta directory, and republishing the list, which is tedious.

Pairing with anyone filter
At the moment the pairings filter requires two characters to work. I'd like to have it where you can choose one character, and get back all the fics with that person in the pairing, no matter who they're paired with.

RTF file support
It's been pointed out that support for uploading RTF files would be useful. It shouldn't be that hard to do, most of the behind the scenes handling will be the same as for txt files with a little extra formatting to take account of.

Rate and review
I’ve recently had myself a little genius of an idea. Beta readers lists are pretty common place around the fanfic interweb nowadays, but what you never see is other people’s opinions of the Beta Readers.
So, I’m thinking of a ratings/review system for the Beta Readers directory, where people can who’ve been Beta’ed can post comments etc.

One shot option
This idea came from an interesting discussion on a LiveJournal (I forget which) that I stumbled accross. The ability for authors to select a 'one shot' option when posting their fics. This would then display a message to readers on the fic page that this story is a one shot, and will have no more updates. This should integrate with the 'Notify me of updates' feature, in that you won't be able to register for updates on a fic that's been marked as a one shot. It may also help cut down on those kind of nice, but also quite annoying Great story!! Write more now!! More! style reviews that plague FF.net

RSS lists for recently updated fic
At the moment the only way to display a list of the recently updated fics on another website is through Javascript. This is functional, but not particularily funky. It would be nice to have this list(s) outputted as an RSS feed instead. That way it could be manipulated better by other sites, and could also be entered into people's RSS aggregators for easy monitoring of new fics. There may be some load issues there though (some aggregators can request a new copy of the RSS feed every couple of minutes!), as well as the programmatical issues.

Disable E-mail notifications
If an e-mail address exists in a users profile, then they will automatically be sent an e-mail message each time someone posts a review for one of their fics. At the moment, the only way to stop receiving these messages is to remove your e-mail address from your profile. This is not very user friendly. A much better alternative would be to have a tick box beside each fic in the Edit A Fic option of the My Account area that allows users to Opt-Out of receiving notifications for that fic.

Microsoft Word chapter uploads
Users can currently upload their fic in plain text files, or HTML files. I've had a couple of requests for Microsoft Word files to be supported as well.
This is somehting that I would quite like to implement, but will take an absolutley huge amount of monkey coding to achieve. Microsoft Word files are large bloated things full of vast amounts of superfluous junk. This makes it very difficult to make sure that nothing a user uploads is going to mess up the layout of the site, or kill the poor server.
A custom component is probably the only reasonable solution, but there are cost issues (not to mention it would be testing the limits of my coding ability) to be considered. In short, this would be a very nice feature, but may take many, many years to ever materialise.

Feature This! option
There's currently no simple way for readers to suggest that a fic they've just read be entered as a Featured Fic (displayed on the front page, and in the Featured Fic list). A one click button that collects the details of a fic and sends it to the admin for consideration would be better.

Prompt generator
Some sort of prompt generator for writers would be good. I've seen a couple of them around the interweb, so I'd have to do something a little different. Perhaps the generated prompts could be more detailed than ususal, suggesting actual plots, rather than just random words?
Suggestions welcome.

WYSIWYG Editor
The online posting interface (where you type the fic directly into the website, rather than uploading it as a seperate file) is basic, and ugly. It's already set up in such a way that it would be fairly easy to bolt on a WYSIWYG editor that would allow point and click formatting, rather than having to use code.

At the moment the pairing of a fic is shown on the main category page, but nowhere else. It should really be displayed on the fic itself, along with the author's notes. It should be on the fic details shown on the profile page as well.

QuickView Stats & less graphics
The My account area is a little bulky at the moment. It would be nice to have a more intuative, possibly text based interface.
A QuickView stats area would then fit in quite nicely. This could display the top viewed fics from the users, as well as the amount of reviews each fic has had etc. Obviously, this QuickView Stats bit is dependent on some of the other items on this list being completed first.

I'd quite like to have the recent reviews, and links to their associated fics, show up on the portal page.
Recent fic is already displayed, but I think it'd be quite good to bring some older fic to the attention of visitors by showing the reviews. That way fic that's getting raved about should be highlighted.

Links page
I've had an idea for a links page. Well, OK, so I've been asked by quite a few people if I could put up a link to their site.
Now, as a rule, I had never intended having links that go offsite, other than in peoples profiles. And I certainly don't want a huge mess of graphics or buttons cluttering up the site.
But, I've just had an idea for a members sites page - This would be a place where people with accounts at Season2Ep14.net could upload a button graphic for their site, which would then be displayed on the members links page, along with fellow members sites.
But! It would also be rotated, along with all the other members buttons, on a space on the front page of Season2Ep14.net.
I think, in return, I'd ask that members sites link back to Season2Ep14.net. But probably not require it.

The Wsiwyg editor is nice and fancy, but it's only compatible with FireFox and IE 5.5+. And not with anything on the Mac. This is annoying.
So, the fancy wysiwyg editor needs to be updated so that it can be used with FireFox, IE, Opera, and Safari on the Mac.

Poll comments
I've decided, mainly 'cause the last poll seemed like it should have at least twelve different answers, that it'd be nice to have comments on the poll on the front page. That way people can explain their answers if they feel the need, or offer an answer that I didn't think of. Or disagree with the premise of the question.
Although, obviously, my premises are always perfect.
